The journey to Sunlight Senior Care began with the medical products industry. We all remember grandpa’s knees getting bad, so he had to use a cane. Or grandma’s need to take her blood sugar so she wouldn’t faint. In providing needed medical equipment and products, we built strong relationships among caregivers, providers, and seniors in the community.
Yet, when their loved ones needed in-home care, our founders were disappointed with the available care options. They began envisioning a better senior care experience.
It would start by developing a mutually agreed upon care plan tailored to the individual’s needs. Caregivers would be matched based on those needed services and client preferences. Care would be scheduled around the client’s needs and any appointments. Communication would be prioritized, utilizing in-person, phone, email, and 24/7 digital platforms. There would be no long-term contracts, and no minimum number of care hours required per week.
In 2014, Sunlight Senior Care started in Lincoln, Nebraska. As the word about our client-centered, in-home care approach spread, we began receiving inquiries from others with similar needs:
In-home care for people with disabilities
In-home care for persons returning home from a hospital or rehab facility
In-home care for individuals with long-term illnesses
As our requests for services increased, we expanded our care to Omaha, NE and Des Moines, IA.
Even then, we knew there was more we wanted to accomplish. In 2025, we began the process of opening our Sunlight Home Medical office. After going through the proper channels, we were able to start taking clients for Home Medical in 2026. This new journey is exciting to our team, since we will be the first agency in the area to provide both medical and non-medical home care in a personalized and collaborative setting. This expansion will allow us to truly provide all the care you need from the comfort of your own home.
Sunlight Senior Care services are non-medical home care services. At Sunlight Senior Care, we believe that every senior deserves to live with dignity, independence, and joy. That’s why we provide care tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. From assisting with daily activities to offering companionship, our personalized approach ensures that seniors can continue living fulfilling lives in the comfort of their own homes. These services can be used in collaboration with services from Sunlight Home Medical, or they can used on their own.
Sunlight Home Medical offers trained medical services for disease, injury, and/or condition based symptoms. Sunlight comes to you to provide care in the comfort of your own home. The purpose of Sunlight Home Medical is to ease your path to recovery. Once you are feeling independent once more, you can continue using our Sunlight Senior Care services on an as-needed basis to assist in everyday tasks that may still be difficult due to your condition.
Sunlight hires only the best individuals in both our office and our caregivers. We believe this is the only way to give the best possible service to the communities we serve. Our hiring process is thorough, so applicants must go through several rounds of screenings, interviews, and trainings before they even step foot in your home.

Home care provides support for individuals to live independently at home, offering both non-medical assistance (personal care, housekeeping, errands) and skilled medical care (nursing, therapy) from professionals, helping seniors, those recovering from illness, or people with disabilities with daily activities and health management in a familiar environment. Services range from bathing and meal prep to medication reminders and wound care, tailored to individual needs, allowing people to "age in place" comfortably.
It starts with the hiring of the caregiver. We do extensive and thorough background checks that include doing sex offender Federal, State, and County searches, as well as looking on the Medicaid exclusion list. We also do an extensive Adult Protective Services and Child Protective Services background check for each caregiver. On top of that, they have a competency test that they need to score 80% or higher on. We then require them to pass a skills assessment. From there, they are provided ongoing training on a monthly basis as well as initial training required in the first month of employment with Sunlight Senior Care.
One of the differentiators for Sunlight Senior Care is that we have nurses on staff that oversee the services that our caregivers provide. This includes providing hands-on training and education as well as regular updates about their clients and how best to provide care to them.
There are many ways to pay for home care.
-The primary way is private pay and out-of-pocket funds that the client has.
-An alternative way is to use long-term care insurance that the client would have had to purchase prior to services.
-A third way to pay for our services is to use Veteran's Benefits or Medicaid waiver services.
Anyone can benefit from home care services. The problem is that many families and clients wait until it's too late instead of slowly introducing the services to help the clients stay independent longer and have a better quality of life. Many times, services are reactionary due to a fall or some type of health issue. We have the best outcomes when our services are introduced as a proactive solution.
Depending on the state regulations, caregivers may or may not be licensed. Many times, we use current or former certified nursing assistants as our caregivers. They go through training during the onboarding process. Then, during their first month, they have extra training that they must go through. After that, they must follow through with ongoing training on a monthly basis.
There's a few different ways that we can start home care services. The way that we typically try to follow is:
1. A thorough phone intake followed up by what we call a "sofa visit" in which we meet with the client and the family to discuss goals, questions, concerns, and discuss how we can be of benefit with our services. From there, the documents and consents are signed.
2. We then move forward with scheduling and setting up a start of care date.
3. On that first day of services, typically our client care coordinator will come out to do an assessment and create what they call a "plan of care." This is the blueprint that the caregiver is to follow when they're providing services.
4. From there, the scheduler and client care coordinator will follow up on a regular basis to make sure that the plan of care is being followed and that the client is satisfied.
Home health care is a range of skilled medical and therapeutic services provided in a patient's home to treat illness or injury, aiming to manage chronic conditions, improve function, or prevent hospitalization.
Qualification for home health services depends on the payer (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance) and your medical situation, but the core requirements are usually similar:
1. A doctor orders home health
2. You need skilled services
3. You are considered "homebound"
We accept most major insurances, or you can private pay.
We hire a variety of health professionals(Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Social Workers, Certified Nursing Assistants) to provide expertise in their areas.
Home health can be for anyone. Any individual experiencing health related complications deserves to receive the care they need to heal and recover.
Every member of our staff is trained and licensed in healthcare or the field they are providing services in. They must also pass an extensive background check and hiring process.
